Here are a few tips and tricks for the installation of seals.
Our own experiences, as well as tips we have received from experienced technicians, have contributed to the creation of this page.
Installation of piston seals (particularly K8):
Use a narrow parcel tape when installing this type of seal. Thus, an overexpansion of the PTFE sliding ring is avoided and the danger of tearing is considerably reduced
Removal of rod seals, wipers, etc.
Do not put unsuitable tools behind the seal (groove bottom) because this will damage the groove. Instead, lance through the groove with your assembly tool (a screwdriver will do), and in this way remove the old seals.
What is the position of the supporting ring in relation to the o-ring?
We keep coming across wrongly installed supporting rings.
Basically it can be said that supporting rings always SUPPORT the o-ring and therefore should be installed behind the o-ring (on the side which is turned away from pressure).
There are a few rare exceptions, which will not be illustrated here.
Can o-rings be used as piston or rod seals?
If possible, do not use o-rings as dynamic seals.
During Hubbewegungen [stroke travel], the o-ring tends to “roll” and therefore often breaks after a short operating time.
Installing a thick-walled seal into a closed groove:
It is often necessary to install thick-walled seal elements into closed installation spaces. In order to “soften” seals, hot water or hydraulic oil can be used for most materials. (Caution: The temperature of the oil must not exceed 100°C. If the oil smokes, it has reached a temperature of around 270°C!!!)
The above tips have been tried and tested and work perfectly. However, when applying these tips you act at your own risk and Kofler-Dichtungen is not liable for any damages resulting from their application.
If you would like to contribute further tips and tricks, we will be pleased to publish them on our website.
